A Visit to the American Alps (Johannesburg Mountain, North Cascades)

Mountains are not stadiums where I satisfy my ambition to achieve, they are the cathedrals where I practice my religion.
— Anatoli Boukreev

There's a reason why Washington State's North Cascades are called the "American Alps." Their peaks are high, rugged, and remote. Few peaks better exemplify these unique characteristics than Johannesburg Mountain, pictured above. Despite a less-than-ideal weather forecast, I recently ventured into the North Cascades and captured this image of Johannesburg's north face in front of some dramatic weather rapidly moving through the area. The American Alps never fail to leave me in awe.
