Frequently Asked Questions
What do you do for a living? How do you fund your travel?
For a living, I am a full-time freelance commercial and editorial photographer. I specialize in several areas, including outdoor sports, lifestyle, and landscapes. As a freelancer, at any given time I am working with a variety of brands, companies, and destinations on a per-contract basis.
My travel is often part of my photography projects for my brands and clients. As a result, my travel is not self-funded personal travel.
Fun fact: before I started photography, I worked as a commercial attorney for five years. This past professional experience, although seemingly unrelated, has been invaluable to me in operating my own photography business, working with clients, and delivering exceptional work product.
What camera should I buy?
I own and use many cameras, each for different occasions and purposes. If you're looking to buy a camera, the "right" camera for you largely depends on your particular goals, areas, and budget. But, in the end, the right camera is whatever camera you have in your hand when the moment worth capturing arises.
How did you get started as a photographer?
While in my home state of Minnesota, I bought a DSLR and started exploring photography as a hobby. When I moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2013, my passions for the mountains and outdoor photography rapidly grew hand in hand. By the beginning of 2015, I had committed to seriously pursuing photography as a job, and I left my original career (the law) and started my own freelance business. As a full-time freelancer, I work closely with a variety of brands and destinations to create and license digital imagery and other content.
