Mount Rainier WORKSHOP

Wilderness & Wildflowers - August 5-8, 2023 - SOLD OUT

Please join us next summer in Mount Rainier National Park for a unique photography workshop experience co-instructed by Photographers Scott Kranz and National Geographic Contributor Stephen Matera. This four-day workshop will involve day-hiking outings for both sunrise and sunset shooting, while focusing on photography techniques for creating images of the incredible mountain landscapes and vibrant wildflower scenes one can only find in the Mount Rainier area during the summer season.

Before the workshop, each of the participants will connect (in person or virtually) with the instructor(s) to discuss their background, experience, and aspirations, setting the stage for a successful workshop field trip. Beforehand you will also receive a welcome packet outlining the workshop itinerary and providing a full packing list and all other details to fully prepare you for the workshop!

On the week of the workshop, the workshop group will meet at Noon on Saturday, August 5, and will end at 11 a.m. on the fourth day, Tuesday, August 8, with optional shooting of afternoon and sunset that same day. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday nights will be spent in accommodations in Packwood, WA; please see the order form for accommodation options and pricing, including private rooms, shared rooms, and camping.

The workshop is limited to eight (8) participants to ensure each participant receives personal attention and guidance. At least five (5) participants must sign up for the workshop to take place.

Also please note this photography workshop will involve moderate/strenuous day hiking (including hikes up to 10 miles and 2500 feet of elevation gain) each day, so participants should be physically fit for hiking with loaded packs over challenging terrain over consecutive days.

What to expect

Each day will bring something different. Scott and Stephen will coordinate to select shooting locations based on time of day, light, and weather. We will let the weather and light help us decide what to shoot each day. Conditions permitting, days will be long as we will plan to get up and shoot sunrise, then shoot until sunset to take advantage of the best light and make the most of each day.

In the middle of the day we'll do an image critique and a lesson in post processing, including RAW processing and conversion, stitching panoramas, or final touches to improve an image.

Some shooting will be from close to the road, while other times we may be hiking to shoot at a prime location.
